Christmas Tree Drop Off

If you had a live Christmas tree this year, you need to know where to dispose of it, unless you have enough room for a nice brush pile on your own property.

The City of Wichita Falls Sanitation Department has opened locations at Lucy Park (at the back of the park near the river) and Kiwanis Park (next to the park maintenance building near the entrance to the park) for easy disposal of natural Christmas trees. The free drop-off areas are open twenty-four hours a day.

Only real trees that have been completely stripped of the tree stand, all decorations and lights will be accepted. No artificial trees will be accepted. The trees will be recycled as mulch and used around trees, shrubs and flower beds in each park. 

City residents can also use the Landfill or Transfer Station for FREE tree disposal anytime during normal operating hours. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these disposal methods, as there is no curbside pickup of Christmas trees. Trees left out by the curb will not be picked up by sanitation crews. 


If you choose,  you may also drop off trees at the Inland Fisheries office at 409 Chester Avenue (off Old Jacksboro Hwy). Those trees are used to improve fish habitat at Lake Arrowhead State Park.

Recycle Your Live Christmas Tree

If you had a live Christmas tree this year, please take it to the Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) Inland Fisheries office by Thursday. Their office is located at 409 Chester Avenue off Jacksboro Hwy. Trees must not be flocked and can have no tinsel. The office doesn't have to be open--you can see where to drop them off in the parking lot.

Inland Fisheries uses these trees to improve fish habitat in local lakes. Trees have been placed in Lake Arrowhead already and TPWD folks and the Rolling Plains Texas Master Naturalists will be placing the remaining trees in Lake Wichita on Friday morning.

Recycle Live Christmas Trees

In my last post, I talked about donating your live trees to Inland Fisheries to be used as fish habitat in Lake Arrowhead. As I mentioned, the City of Wichita Falls also takes live trees to use as mulch around the city.

The announcement from the city came out today. The city does not pick up trees at curbside, so you can deliver your trees (after removing decorations and tree stands) to Lucy Park or Kiwanis Park in the area near the tree farms--you can tell the place by the piles of mulch. You can deliver the trees until January 31. After that you can drop trees at the Transfer Station.

Help Create Fish Habitat

If you get a live Christmas tree, you can donate that tree after the holidays to help improve fish habitat in Lake Arrowhead.

Normally, Texas Parks and Wildlife gets the leftover trees from various tree lots in town to sink into the lake for fish habitat. The Rolling Plains Texas Master Naturalists help with this project. However, this year everyone has sold out of the live trees. Therefore, the fish need your help.

You may drop off live trees in the parking lot at Inland Fisheries at 409 Chester Avenue. Remove all lights, ornaments and tinsel. TPWD cannot use flocked trees--the chemical isn't good for the fish.

The city also accepts trees for mulching, but I haven't seen the details for that yet. I will post when I do.
